Penhorwood, ordained pastor in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is graduated from Lexington
Theological Seminary alongside my wife, Rev. Kara Swartz. They have a wonderful daughter, Sophia, who
keeps them on our toes and is the joy of their life. Rev. Penhorwood served as Youth Director/Advisor in
many different congregations/denominations over the years, worked in Rwanda, Africa with the Methodist
Church as a worker and missionary and was called to Douglass Blvd Christian Church in Louisville, KY as an
Associate/Youth Minister. He finished his seminary career as Student Senior Minister at Moorefield
Christian Church. Growing up in Ohio, the Christian Church in Ohio’s camp program, Camp Christian, was
incredibly influential in his life. That is where he met his wife, and found his calling to be a pastor within
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Dear Members and Friends of Central Christian Church,

In June of 1987, Central Christian Church of Kettering extended my first call as an ordained Disciples of Christ minister. I served as your Associate Minister for three years and learned a great deal about how to be a pastor both from you and from my mentor in ministry, Rev. Ted Faulconer. In July of 1996, I returned to Central Christian Church as the Senior Minister and have been blessed by my ministry here ever since.

For many years I have hoped to one day move closer to my parents and family in Iowa. On January 25, 2012, I accepted the call of First Christian Church in Keokuk, Iowa to be their new Senior Minister. The church is in the southeast corner of the state and just a short drive from my college alma mater, Culver Stockton College.

At a special board meeting on Friday, January 27, 2012, I submitted my resignation as Senior Minister of Central Christian Church in Kettering. My last Sunday in the pulpit will be March 11, 2012. Tammy will continue in her teaching position through the end of the school year and then join me in Keokuk this summer.

Over the fifteen years I have served as your Senior Minister I have grown and matured in my faith and also as a pastor. With the assistance of the Christian Church in Ohio, you will now begin an interim time of reflection and study as God prepares this beloved church for a new minister. I trust God will bless Central Christian as it moves forward in mission and ministry in new directions and under new pastoral leadership. I will miss you more than you can know.

Sincerely,

Rev. David P. Turner

This past Sunday, we re-opened the nursery. It has been redecorated and refurnished, and the feedback we’ve gotten so far has been very positive! If you were ever in the nursery (as a child, or as a caregiver), please be sure to stop in – we have a “Tree of Life” that was painted and it needs leaves. We have paint available that we will roll on one hand, so that you can put your handprint on the tree, to make up the leaves. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped renovate the nursery and bathroom over the last several months. Special thanks to Anne and Mark Keeton for spearheading the project and for their countless hours working on the nursery. Thanks also to Melissa and David Moody and Moniqua Suits for their help stripping wallpaper, installing baseboard, and painting. We also appreciate Alexis Garybush donating her time and talent to paint the wonderful “Tree of Life” for us. Connie Doss did a great job putting down the new tile in the bathroom and John Bucy was instrumental in replacing the plumbing fixtures. Again, thank you all and stop and see our nursery!

Special Event Planned for October 3, 2010

On October 3rd, Worldwide Communion Sunday will be a special morning and lunch time for Central. LaTanya Bynum, our Associate Regional Pastor will be delivering the message at the traditional service and will lead the presentation of highlights of our 1 and 3 year objective. Our CYF group will be serving a lunch as a fund raiser for their projects as well. So be sure to plan to stay and see the results of the input given to our objectives. Thank you to all of you who so enthusiastically participated in the small groups to give input to this project; 48% of our average attending congregation participated. Some new projects have already been started as a result of ideas shared at these input sessions and adopted by individuals. This is the first time we have purposefully set objectives for all aspects of church life and it will be a tradition followed for many years to come.
