Adult Christian Education studies will resume at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 11th with a class led by David Moody. This class will investigate the church as a “power center” in the political environment, reviewing the history of the Christian church in how it gained, lost, and used political power. This will include evaluating how politics affects the identity of the church in the present day environment. We will share a meal in the Fellowship Hall at 6:15 pm. If possible, please let the church office know that you will be attending so that we know how much food to prepare and which room to use for the class.

Note: We are also pleased to offer a Christian parenting class that will also be offered on Wednesday evenings. The facilitator and specific topic are still being identified at the time of this printing, but further details will be made available by Sunday’s bulletin.

Starting on Wednesday, September 14th, Central will be offering 3 different studies for any adult interested in participating.

A Bible study on the book of Acts. Using only our Bibles as textbooks, we will mine the treasures of Luke’s sequel to his Gospel – the amazing story of the early church, it’s birth at Pentecost, it’s growth and challenges and the many characters and leaders that brought it into being. One of the things we learn from Acts is how the church preserved its integrity and found its identity in the midst of a very powerful Greco-Roman culture. Needless to say, there are many parallels between the experience of the early church and the church today. Come and join us as we delve deep into what some have called the “Gospel of the Holy Spirit.” It will be a fun, inspiring, and thought provoking study. Rev. David Turner will lead this study in the Fellowship Hall.

Couldn’t make it to General Assembly, but like to hear good preaching? We’ll be showing DVDs of the sermons from the General Assembly. Come get connected with the general church of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)! The first will be Rev. Holly McKissick’s sermon from the opening worship, which we will watch on September 14th. Rev. McKissick started a new Disciples church before new church ministry was “cool” among Disciples. Twenty years later, Saint Andrew Christian Church, Olathe, Kansas, has welcomed 800 members, constructed one of the Disciples first “green” buildings, and taken on issues of justice and mission “from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth.” Honored with the Innovation in Ministry Award from Brite Divinity School, this story-telling preacher translates complex theological ideas into missional action for today’s Christians. Larry Merkle will moderate this offering in the Sanctuary.

A book study based on Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. Dave condenses his 17 years of financial teaching and counseling into 7 organized, easy-to-follow steps that will lead you out of debt and into a Total Money Makeover. Plus, you’ll read over 50 real-life stories from people just like you who have followed these principles and are now winning with their money. It is a plan designed for everyone, regardless of income or age. This is not a “Christian” book, and it isn’t a Bible study on the subject of money. But this is a book about a “Proven” Plan to Financial “Fitness” that Dave and his team have developed over two decades, and that plan includes addressing the spiritual issues surrounding money. Please note: this class does require the Total Money Makeover book, which can be picked up at most bookstores. If you pre-register, we will order a supply of these books and have them available on the first night of class. Melissa Moody will lead this study in Classroom E.

These classes will meet each week at 7:00 pm and to kick off the study there will be a light dinner provided starting on the 14th at 6:15. See you there!

This coming Sunday, February 20th, Mr. Reggie Evans will begin an approximately eight week discussion of First and Second Thessalonians in the Max Lucado Sunday School Class. Although some of the outline for these discussions will come from a Max Lucado study, Reggie’s knowledge of the Bible will provide the heart of these discussions. The term “discussions” is used here because this class utilizes a “moderator-class participation” form of learning. The class begins at 9:00 am so that choir members attending can leave at 10:00 am for rehearsal. Please attend these classes as we study the purpose of these epistles and apply their lessons to our everyday lives? The title that Max Lucado gives to this study is “Fearless Faith – Standing Firm in Freedom and Hope”. Seems very appropriate for today, doesn’t it.

The Gospel of Mark has been described by some scholars as the story of Jesus’ passion with an extended introduction. Therefore, it is the perfect study for the 40 day season of Lent in preparation for both the suffering of Holy Week and the glory of Easter. It begins with Jesus’ baptism and moves quickly through Jesus’ ministry in Galilee before he begins his final journey to Jerusalem and the events that await him there. Mark was the first Gospel and is the shortest – but is filled with power. Come and join during the Lenten season as we explore the masterpiece of the first Gospel.

10-week Intensive Study begins Wednesday, September 15th

On ten Wednesday evenings, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., we will be studying the book of Psalms in the Meeting Room. All are invited to join in this comprehensive study of some of the most beautiful texts in scripture. The human emotions expressed in the Book of Psalms rise to peaks of joy and descend into valleys of despair. In the Psalms, the promise of the reign of God meets the historical experience of God’s people. Faith in God’s faithfulness collides with human experiences of pain and suffering, enslavement, oppression, and exile. God’s people — given voice in the Psalms – struggle to make sense of who God is and who they are, and in so doing they have composed a collection of moving testimonies of grace, glory, sorrow, and beauty unmatched in sacred literature. For students of the Psalms today, this study offers greater understanding of how these ancient texts of praise, lament, worship, and prayer can still speak to us and for us.

A signup sheet will be available on Sunday mornings and you may also call the church office to reserve a student book. A donation of $10 is invited to help cover the cost of study materials. Childcare will be provided.

A new book study led by Larry Merkle will start this Sunday at 9:00 a.m. You will be discussing John Shelby Spong’s Eternal Live: A New Vision: Beyond Religion, Beyond Theism, Beyond Heaven and Hell. According to the Publishers Weekly review, the book “provides a lucid historical analysis of the development of human religious though from the onset of selfconscious awareness to the present, and a compelling argument for the creation of a new religious paradigm… Arguing that modern scientific understanding necessitates dismissing outdated metaphors and assumptions by which faith seeks to calm human anxiety, Spong suggests an understanding of God not as a person, but as the process that calls personhood into being. … This work … offers new insights into religion’s big questions about life and death ….” It is available from amazon.com for $16.49 and from other major booksellers for comparable prices. For more information about this study contact Larry Merkle.
